Landscape: Discovering A New Genre

My Art Mentor: Robert Genn May 15th 1936 - May 27th 2014
| |||||||
I feel a great sadness today as I sit here writing a tribute to my mentor Robert Genn, whom passed away on May 27th, with tears in my eyes, I wonder what should I say and how to express my lost.
I don't know Robert Genn personally but I feel like somehow I know him quite intimately through his art, newsletters and his books. I remember the first time I saw his work about 10 years ago in Hambleton Gallery in Kelowna, I was awe struck by the presence of his landscape painting. It was majestic and the light that poured out from his brush strokes was magnificent. That was my first impression of Robert Genn. From that day onward, I was hooked on Robert Genn. I read his newsletter and bought his books. My favourite is The Painters's Key, it became my bible, I read it religiously every year before my painting season began. Although my art work has a completely different genre than Robert Genn's he truly is my most engaging and inspiring teacher. I've learned through his eyes and the ways he observed, he was masterful and wise beyond belief. His newsletter was always filled with rich insights, great quotations, techniques and definitely designed to inspire any artists that took the time to get a little closer to Robert Genn.
Thank you Robert for teaching me how to be a better artist, thank you for the inspirations and for being my mentor. Love you forever you will be greatly missed. Your legacy will live on. If you are an artist, please treat yourself to The Painter's Key, a book that truly enriched my life as an artist. To learn more about Robert Genn please click here: www.robertgenn.com

| The Moonlit Serenade by Ting Yuen I am a huge fan of Romance and Love, matter of fact I have devoted an entire series to Romance. I have many paintings about this amazing subject. I have at least fifteen works devoted to my husband and best friend. My Romance Series is available as small prints and art cards, all of the Romance series originals are sold except for my newest Romance painting The Moonlit Chat III above. If you wish to see more of my Romance Series please check out my website www.artrushgallery.com. The stories for the above works are below: The Moonlit Chat III Moonlit Chat is about the importance of communication in a relationship. My husband Paul and I spend a lot of time together in both work and play and we are always chatting up a storm. We dream up new adventures and reminisce the past. The secret to good communication is trust, respect and putting our differences aside. Through our long conversations, Paul and I have learned to work through our differences and to use the challenges in our lives to strengthen our relationship. I love chatting with my best friend because it helps us to re-connect over and over again. The Moonlit Serenade This painting is created for the romantic at heart because I am one too. Moonlit Serenade is about the importance of romance. My husband and I have been together for twenty years, we have had our challenges and have worked through them and became stronger as a couple. One of the things that nurtures the strength of our relationship is doing special things for each other on a daily basis, this reminds us how much we appreciate each other and makes us come together as a loving couple. Happy Valentine's Day everyone! Remember your loved ones and treat them to something thoughtful and special. |

Art for the New Year
![]() |
| Guidance by Ting Yuen My work is taking new turns and twists for the new year. Last year, before my move to Nelson, I did three landscape paintings which are not on line yet because I am still trying to catch up with the move and changes. Yikes! But alas I am semi caught up and to end 2013 one of my landscape paintings was sold on the last day of the year. For 2014, I am planning to do more landscape paintings in assorted formats making them affordable for anyone that loves to own an original of mine. My signature styles of Dreamscapes will continue as well, I got quite a few sketched out already and am awaiting patiently to start my new collection. Next week I have a date with my Studio and planning to have many dates with my Studio from that day onward. Operating a gallery and creating art can be such a juggle, they both need so much love and attention, sometimes I do feel quite torn, juggling and trying to find balance for my personal life as well. Impossible?? Nah, not in my vocabulary, I just have to get up earlier and do more. This post I have chosen Guidance as my companion painting because she symbolizes my Higher Self that assists me in my art, I look forward to reacquaint with her and hope to draw from her inspirational well endlessly and am grateful to have Guidance as my forever muse. |

Moved to Nelson!
![]() |
| Moving Again! by Ting Yuen |
I was painting in my studio at home one sunny spring day in Kimberley, thinking about travelling and seeing more and feeling a sense of urgency that life is too short for stability, the phone rang and my husband, Paul was on the line, "Do you want to move to Nelson?" I said "Yes!" and here we are, less than two months after our visit to Nelson, we packed up our gallery and home and moved to Nelson, our new home town for our lives and our business.
Paul and I are settling down in Nelson and loving every minute of it! It's different, it's eclectic, it's got quite a groove may I add and the vibration of energy is completely different than most places that Paul and I have been in Canada. And of course with all the excitement, our emotions are balanced off with nervous anticipation of the unknown and stress is definitely part of the exhilerating experience.
Below you will see some of my paintings that are about uprooting, finding homes and also some pics of our gallery in Nelson, B.C.. Enjoy!
P/S I am so looking forward to painting my new collecction of artwork. It has definitely been quite a journey!

This Elephant stole my Heart
This is my elephant that I adopted for a day. Her name is Lucky, here she is giving me a hug. I love her so much and she stole my heart just like Thailand did.
I just came back from a business trip with my best friend and husband, Paul. This year we went to Thailand. We made some great contacts with local artists and got to experience a few amazing adventures to add into our inspirations for work.
I came back home from Thailand wanting to relive the experience over and over again. It is definitely a country that made me feel conflicted inside, on one hand it made me appreciate what I have here but on the other hand it made me feel that life should be lived just like the Thais do, it's hard but real and no matter how crazy the cities of Thailand are the Thais always have a genuine smile for you and the connection is always there.
One of my inspirations for my 2013 art work will definitely have to be my experience at Patara Elephant Farm where I met Lucky, I was her Mahood for the day. I got to feed her, which by the way made me her instant best friend hence the "hug". Ben the Vet of Patara Elephant Farm taught me how to check my elephant's health, I got to wash and swim with her and got to ride her through the forest. When the day is over I only wished I could do it all over again. I have always loved elephants which is apparent in my work but now I love them even more. If you get a chance to visit Thailand please do check out the Patara Elephant Farm. I'll keep you posted when Lucky showed up on my Canvas.

It takes Time to build a Dream
![]() |
| Castles in the Sky by Ting Yuen Happy New Year!! You know what they say the older you get the faster time will fly. Well, I am in my mid 40's now and time is not just zooming by in lightning speed, it's non existent! It makes me realize that life is really a fleeting moment. Well, 2012 was a fabulous year, our business turned 10! During the first eight years of our business Paul and I did not treat ourselves with any business abroad for our inspirations and studio time, instead we stayed and worked in Canada and found inspirations from our own country . We worked every summers with no days off for nine years but we did what we needed to do in order for our business to sustain itself. 2012 was the first year we went abroad for a three week business trip and the first summer that we took a day off a week. Hard work and determination do pay off, but it took many years of sacrifice and self discipline. Looking back I'm glad that Paul and I put our hearts and souls into our business because watching the growth of our business is the most rewarding thing and now having the chance to travel again is really our dream come true. Well, Happy New Year everyone! I would also like to thank all of for your support, because of you our progress was made possible. Wishing you a year of good health and may you live an authentic life of your dreams. The Painting shown above depicts what it takes to build a dream. Spring has Sprung

| Swinging on a Star II by Ting Yuen Read Story |
Paul and I are enjoying the benefits of having Dori to assist us. Paul is working on our new website, which I have to say is fabulous, do check it out: www.artrushgallery.com. You can now shop on line, look at the art work and even read the stories attached. I am sure you'll love it as much as we do. Other than designing the website and dealing with the other mountain of things that he does, Paul is also getting ready to go out there to enjoy the spring and summer nature photography.
I, on the other hand am painting my new collection. I have moved my studio to my apartment, and am loving the privacy and the no distractions. The collection is coming along and it looks like a strong line of work will be showcased by June in the gallery as well as the website. I can't wait to share them with you!
Jewelry making is also on the go as usual, Paul and I are working hard at it and really having a hard time keeping up. We call those "good problems" and we have also come to the conclusion that we will always be behind and that is o.k.

" Courage " inspired by Bonnie Gilles

ppiness. Now, a little about the girl that inspired me, Bonnie is originally from Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada. She moved to Williams Lake, British Columbia about two and a half years ago. Nomadic life style was her way of life, although after discovering British Columbia she fell in love with the nature of the place and it brought back memories of riding horses in a childhood. Since she is a lover of nature and the energy that it provides, setting her roots here in British Columbia was the ultimate and most natural thing for her to do. After a long and difficult moment of metamorphosing, Bonnie bought a horse and developed her skills as a rider. Bonnie devoted her love to the joy of riding and became
a rodeo star. The stars are definitely with her during her moment of transition she met many wonderful friends and became enlightened by life and love. If you wish to know more about Bonnie , please visit her blog, she is an amazing writer and I believe she definitely has a future in story telling and recording her life journey with humour and heart.

Art Recipes : Be a Full Time Artist ( Part III )

dge could carry me through and I was in awe with my confidence. One of the things that set my confidence to a different height was that I gave myself permission to destroy any of my images that I wasn't thrilled about. In the end I only threw out one canvas and ended up with 27 images and they were ready for showcasing on the opening day of our gallery!I was proud and so was my husband!
My collection became smaller but stronger. The wonderful thing about honing in on your skills is that it sets your imagination to new heights. I constantly dream up of new images for my paintings. Imagination may come naturally for some of us but others may struggle with it. I believe imagination can be trained, thinking creatively can be pursued through pushing the boundaries of your thoughts. For example, let's say I would like to paint an apple in an expressive manner, I may decide to put the apple on the table or in a bowl or on a chair, but so far I find that all these images seem predictable........so how about suspend the apple in mid air with a pair of wings...?? As you can see, from this simple practice of broadening my thoughts, the apple became not just an apple anymore, it became an interesting riddle.
Before I finish off, I would like to thank you for reading my blog and for leaving me your comments. I have enjoyed reading them!

From Believing to Doing: Be a full time Artist ( Part II )

There is more to Believing in your dream than the act of " A leap of Faith ". I do agree that faith has a lot to do with my dream, I trust the Universe wholeheartedly and responsibly when I share my gift with the world.
Although what got me started was of course the love at first sight with my craft. All I knew was how deliriously happy I felt when I was painting and how absurdly annoyed I was when it wasn't going well. All these wonderful passions that I fell in love with prompted me to want more and that is what set everything in motion.
The painting above is called Journeys painted by myself, you may check out the story of the painting by clicking here.
Now with the realization of my dream, I figured with all those inspirations, it will not be fruitful without careful planning.
So I bought myself a little black book and I wrote all my goals down to become a full time artist, I then gave each of my goals a time span of when and how I would like to execute them. From there, I planned out what I would like to accomplish each month. Now, a little advice: It's best to review your monthly goals daily but I tend to do mine bi-monthly which usually ends up with me cramming a few things all in a day or two because I was way behind schedule due to my reclusive painting time in my studio. After my great accomplishments of catching up I cross them off my list, whatever seemed impossible to get done for the month gets put on the next month list. Remember in order to avoid such rude awakenings and stress in your life, review your itinerary daily! I believe I need to set an hour a day to deal with my business part of my goals, remember living your dream as a full time artist is not all about studio time, a large part of it is business.
Here are some examples of what your initial goal setting may look like:
1. Create a collection of art work. ( in the next two months )
2. Get my biography updated. ( next week )
3. Get my resume updated. ( next week )
4. Apply for art shows. ( in the spring of 2010 )
5. Apply for Galleries to represent my artwork. ( on going, try for 2 galleries per year)
6. Create a blog. ( today )
7. Create a customer list. ( on going, but start now! )
8. Own my own Art gallery. ( in two years from now )
etc........

The painting above is called Paradise Found, painted by myself, you may check out the story of the painting by clicking here.
Goal setting and strategising means hard work, determination and persistence and the partner in crime is "Faith", I know somehow the Universe takes care of me and my dream but I also need to work laboriously to do my part in the success of my art career and always remind myself to stay focused and be grateful.
To be a full time artist may sound like fun, but it is a business and you need to commit to your dream with all your heart, mind and hands. Create constantly, own your craft and remember to learn continuously and grow as an artist.
My next blog will be the Part III of To be a full time Artist, I will be touching on the topics of Art Recipes!
If you wish to share your stories of success with me or if you have any questions, I will be delighted to connect with you.

An Introduction to my Art Work

I paint predominantly with acrylic on stretched canvas. I enjoy working in series, my four main series are: The Artist Diary, Romance, Sisterhood and Season. Furthermore, each of my images comes with the related story that tells you the inspiration behind that particular painting.
Please take your time to view my work and I hope you'll enjoy them !
The above painting is called A leap of Faith, it is part of the Artist Dairy Series.
A Leap of Faith:
A Leap of Faith is about the trust that we surrender to the Universe. In this painting, the girl is balancing on a tight rope, juggling butterflies in the air with her eyes closed smiling with confidence believing that somehow the Universe will protect her from harm and that in good time everything in her life will manifest it’s beauty.
I painted A Leap of Faith because I am always amazed how powerful faith is. It may be all we need to ease the fear of the unknown. In many ways Faith is like prayers answered.

The painting on the right is called The Moonlit Chat, it is part of the Romance Series.
The Moonlit Chat:
Moonlit Chat is about the importance of communication in a relationship.

The painting on the left is called You've Got Mail, it is part of the Sisterhood Series.
You've Got Mail:
You’ve Got Mail is
about
communication. My sisters and I live far away from each other but we are constantly in contact through the magical convenience of email. In this painting, all four girls are receiving their mail at the same time which symbolizes our group emails, sometimes some of these conversations may last for days. I love our group emails because it helps us to keep in touch despite the distance.

The painting on the right is called Winter is part of The Seasons Series.
Winter:
In this painting, I have painted a girl laying in bed watching the snow covered scenery and enjoying the beauty of winter. Winter for me is a time of rest, relaxation and gathering of energy.
